Allow twenty minutes for dark adaptation before judging sky quality. Avoid phone screens; if you must check charts, use a red-filter app at minimum brightness.
7×50 binoculars are a practical default for open clusters and bright nebulae from suburban sites. Heavier 10×50 models need a tripod or braced elbows to stay steady.
Pack a folding chair, dew rag for lenses, and a printed limit chart for the targets you plan to sketch. Batteries fail in cold air — carry spares for red flashlights.
Log wind and humidity in your notebook. High humidity scatters light pollution and lowers contrast even when clouds are absent.
