Battery swap checklist — Part 1 of 3 · Automotive care

Wear gloves and eye protection before working near a car battery. Lead-acid units contain sulfuric acid electrolyte; even a small splash can irritate skin and eyes. Choose nitrile or chemical-resistant gloves that still allow a firm grip on terminal clamps. Safety glasses or a face shield protect against sparks when metal tools bridge terminals.
Park on level ground, engage the parking brake, and switch off the ignition. Remove the key or fob so accessory circuits do not draw power while cables are open. If the vehicle has start-stop, consult the owner manual — some trims require a memory saver on the OBD port before disconnecting.
Work in a ventilated area. Batteries can vent hydrogen gas, which is flammable. Keep open flames and grinding sparks away from the engine bay. Lay cardboard under the tray to catch corrosion crumbs and protect paint from acid residue.
Identify polarity before touching cables. The positive post is usually marked with a plus sign and often has a red boot. The negative post connects to chassis ground. Photograph cable routing if the layout is unfamiliar.
Disconnect the negative terminal first, then the positive. This order prevents accidental short circuits: if a wrench touches grounded metal while loosening the positive clamp, current cannot flow because the negative path is already open.
Use a properly sized wrench or socket on the clamp nut. Hold the bolt head steady if it spins; do not twist the post, which can break internal connections. Wiggle the clamp gently after loosening until it slides off the post.
Once the negative clamp is free, tuck it aside where it cannot contact the post or any metal. Repeat for the positive clamp. Insulate exposed clamps with tape if they might swing back toward the posts during removal.
Label extra leads only if you removed more than the main two cables. Some vehicles have a sensor wire on the negative clamp for battery monitoring; note its position for reassembly.
Remove the hold-down bracket or strap that secures the battery in the tray. Common designs use a J-bolt across the top or a wedge at the base. Keep hardware in a cup — reuse it unless the replacement includes a different bracket kit.
Lift out the old battery with both hands. Units weigh between 30 and 50 pounds depending on group size. Keep the case upright to avoid spilling electrolyte. If the case is cracked or leaking, bag it immediately for recycling.
Clean corrosion from the tray with a wire brush and baking-soda solution. Neutralize acid residue before it eats through the tray coating. Dry the area thoroughly before placing the replacement.
Inspect cable clamps for pitting or green corrosion. Replace clamps that will not tighten evenly on the new posts. Apply dielectric grease on clean posts after installation, not before the clamp is seated.
